Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 12 weeks of nordic walking and regular walking on gait capacity and activity of daily living (ADL) in elderly women.

Methods: Total 15 women who are over the age of 60 were participated in this study. They were classified as nordic walking group (n = 7) and regular walking group (n = 8). The measurement of body composition, cardiovascular function, gait capacity and ADL. The gait capacity test was performed through the system analysis of GAITRite and ADL was conducted by muscle strength (grip strength, leg endurance against wall), muscle endurance (arm curl, sitting and stand up on chair), balance (one leg balance with eyes open, functional reach), agility (catching a dripped bar, standing up from a supine position), flexibility (sit and reach), coordination (pagboard, carrying beans) and walking around two corns in a figure 8. In addition, nordic walking and walking exercise program were performed by 60 minutes, 3 times a week for 12 weeks. The exercise intensity was set to the anaerobic threshold (VO2AT) level.

Results: As a result, in body composition and cardiovascular functions, nordic walking group shows statistically an increase in fat-free mass, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and VO2AT (p£¼0.05) compared to the comparison group. In gait capacity test, nordic walking group has significantly increased in gait speed and stride length (p£¼0.05) compared to the regular walking group. In ADL, nordic group shows statistically significant difference in grip strength, leg endurance against wall, one leg balance with eyes open, and walking around two corns in a figure 8 compared to the regular group (p£¼0.05).

Conclusions: In conclusion, nordic walking exercise are expected to be used for various exercise program such as physical and strength improvement and health promotion.
